Gender and Diversity in Academic Teaching

05.11.2021 | 09:00 - 12:30

This workshop is a cooperation with the teaching certicate program SUPPORT für die Lehre.

Student diversity is part of the reality of everyday university life. This is also connected with experiences of discrimination and privilege in social structures of inequality. What does this mean for your courses? How can you create a space − through your attitude, communication and choice of methods − that take into account the diversity of students and that enables good learning for all?
In this workshop, you will learn the basics of gender- and diversity-sensitive didactics. In doing so, we follow a concept of diversity that accentuates the perspective of anti-discrimination. Gender and diversity research offers starting points for critically questioning assumptions and exclusion mechanisms. To consider structural aspects, we will also talk about the general framework for gender and diversity at the FU Berlin, such as regulations and counseling services.
This half-day workshop offers a condensed introduction to gender and diversity in academic teaching, first approaches for your own class-design and selective suggestions to develop your gender- and diversity-competence as a lecturer. We will use different materials from the Toolbox Gender and Diversity in Teaching.

Learning objectives

  • Reflective examination of the dimensions of gender- and diversity-sensitive didactics
  • Development of individual pproaches for the design of gender- and diversity-sensitive classes
  • Getting to know the 'Toolbox Gender and Diversity in Teaching' as a resource for planning and execution of gender- and diversity-sensitive courses.

Self-study units

A self-study unit of 20-30 minutes is included as preparation for the workshop. It consists of solving of quizzes and creation of a mind map based on an explanatory film by the Toolbox.

Forms of work

The workshops in the SUPPORT for Teaching program are learner-centered and action-oriented. They work with varied social forms, exercises, group work, reflection, and feedback; the participants are thus given the opportunity to directly deepen what they have learned and to actively try it out.
Gender- and diversity-sensitive didactics are applied in the workshop and partly reflected on a meta-level.
